January 16 Bi-lingual education is an endless struggle(blogging during the commercial break of American Idol Season 7 day 2 Dallas audition) Jasmine's story: Jasmine spent her 1st in the states with us and her 2nd year in Shanghai with the grandparents. As a result she is confused and didn't start talking until she is almost 2 years old. Justin's story: Justin was mainly speaking Chinese with our family and our nanny. I was worried by the time he is about to enter preschool and intentionally picked a Montessori school with one Taiwan teacher and one Singapore teacher in the classroom. Many thanks to those 2 teachers, his transition to school life went very smooth and he picked up English in less than 3 month. But the problem is: after a couple more months, he told me: mommy, I don't know how to say this in Chinese. So I finally realized at certain time I will be either worried about my kids' English or their Chinese, I should just let it go, let them be themselves, no matter it's ABC or banana or a true bi-lingual. January 07 End of 2007Year 2007 is a big milestone: Jeff and I have been to the states for 10 years and it's also our 10 year anniversary. Jasmine is doing great in her gifted program in Rosa Park, meanwhile enjoying all the extra-curriculums, such as soccer, swim, drawing, drama, piano and a couple tennis camp in summer. (yes, that's a lot) Justin continues his second year in Montessori, he also started to enjoy his drawing and piano classes. Liying expended her work responsibly from 1 product group to 2 product groups. Trying very hard to keep up with the kids and her own hobbies. She is no longer doing year-book in her scrapbook, instead made a few mini-books with various themes and very proud of them. She also started to pick up a new skill - jewelry making. Jeff finally released a V1 product in his 7 year career with the company - the reward is good too: a launching/training trip to Brazil. He met a couple presidential candidates on the campus and read a lot of books this year. He kept up with all the sports he likes and luckily already won some tickets for the Olympics next year. His weekend trip to golf driving range is on the right track too. We had one trip to Cancun Mexico during the spring break and one to yellow stone NP during summer vacation. Both are fabulous! Towards the end of the year, we made a big decision to move back to our hometown to work/live there for a few years (with the same company though). It will be a good opportunity for our career as well as for our kids to immerge into Chinese culture. We are very excited and looking forward to the new year. |
